詩の説明
松庵寺は岩手県花巻市内にある浄土宗の古刹である。終戦直前の昭和20年に宮沢賢治の父、実弟を頼り花巻に疎開する。空襲で疎開先も焼失し、郊外に粗末な庵を建て移り住んだ。それが現在は高村山荘として保存されている。
すでに妻智恵子も亡くなり、独り住まいのわびしさだったが、高村光太郎は妻を偲び、この松庵寺で法事を行った。その時の智恵子を想い綴った詩がこの詩である。訳者、平賀氏は「智恵子抄」にも勝る詩であると話されている。

奥州花巻というひなびた町の
浄土宗の古刹松庵寺で
秋の村雨ふりしきるあなたの命日に
まことにささやかな法事をしました
花巻の町も戦火をうけて
すっかり焼けた松庵寺は
物置小屋に須弥壇をつくった
二畳敷のお堂でした
雨がうしろの障子から吹きこみ
和尚さまの衣のすそさえ濡れました
和尚さまは静かな声でしみじみと
型どほりに一枚起請文を読みました
仏を信じて身をなげ出した昔の入の
おそろしい告白の真実が
今の世でも生きてわたしをうちました
限りなき信によってわたしのために
燃えてしまったあなたの一生の序列を
この松庵寺の物置御堂の仏の前で
又も食い入るように思いしらべました

At the old Shoanji-Temple of the Johdo sect
In the rural town of Hanamaki in northern Japan,
I held a small memorial during a heavy autumn shower
On the anniversary of your death.
Hanamaki was ruined in the flames of war;
And Shoanji-Temple, completely burnt down,
Was now just a two mat room in a shed,
In which a dais for a Buddhist image was raised.
The rain blew in through shoji screens behind the priest
And moistened the hem of his robe.
The priest, in a calm voice, convincingly and
Formally read "Ichimai Kishomon" (Honen's teachings).
I was impressed by the truth, still alive even today,
Of the dire confession of an ancient man,
Who had believed in Buddha sacrificing his life.
Before the Buddhist image in the Shoanji-Temple shed
I deeply reflected again upon the sequences
Of your whole life, which had been burnt up for me,
With Your infinite trust in me rooted in deep love.

アサヒ・ウイークリーに掲載された作者不詳の一文である。今日一日を大切に生きよう、そのためには何をすべきか、何を心がければいいのか、気負いもなく、人のせいにせず、巻き込まず、精いっぱいのありふれた日常的な生き方がよいと、語りかけている。

Just for today

Just for today I will live through the next 12 hours and not tackle my entire life's problems at once.
Just for today I will improve my mind. I will learn something useful. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
Just for today I will be agreeable, I will look my best, I will speak in a well modulated voice, and I will be courteous and considerate.
Just for today I will not find fault with friend, relative or colleague. I will not try to change or improve anyone but myself.
Just for today I will have a program. I might not fallow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two enemies--- hurry and indecision.
Just for today I will exercise my character in three ways. 1 will do a good turn and keep it a secret. If anyone finds out, it won't count.
Just for today I will do two things I don't want to do, just for the discipline.
Just for today I will be unafraid. Especially will I be unafraid to enjoy what 　is beautiful and believe that as I give to the world, the world will give to me.

ただ今日のために、次の12時間を生き抜き、一度に全生涯の様々な問題に取り組まないようにしよう。
ただ今日のために心を磨き何か役立つことを学ぼう。努力と思考と集中力とを要する何かそんな物を読もう。
ただ今日のために感じの良い人になろう。最善を見て、和やかな声で話し、礼儀正しく、思いやりのある人になろう。
ただ今日のために、友や身内や同僚の欠点を探さない様にしよう。自分以外には、誰もその人を変えようとしたり、良くなって欲しいとは思わないようにしよう。
ただ今日のために一つの計画を持とう。正確には出来ないけれどやってみよう。二つの敵･･･慌てる事と優柔不断･･･は省くことにしよう。
ただ今日のために三つの方法で品性を磨こう。良い方に転換するかもしれないが、そのことは秘密にしておこう。もし誰かがそれに気が付いても、それはたいしたことではない。ただ今日のために、したくはないが、二つの事をしよう。修養のために。

青春とは　　YOUTH　平賀六郎氏日本語訳

詩の説明
サミュエル・ウルマンの「YOUTH」（青春とは）はあまりにも有名な詩である。若いころは老いることの恐れもなく、希望や努力を見失うことはなかった。ただ、見失えばそれは若くても青春ではなく、年老いても情熱を持つものは若いのだという思いは、年齢がかさんだ、今、身にしみる言葉である。この詩の訳はたくさんの方が訳されているが、我々がよく目にする漢文調の訳詩は、ウルマンの親戚から、ウルマンの真意から離れているといわれている。
平賀氏は独自の視点から、自由詩訳を封じ、原文に近い訳をされている。私が知っているものとは相当かけ離れていると感じている。

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, fear, self‐distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

青春とは　　　　　　　Samuel･Ullmann　

青春とは人生のある時期をいうのではない。そうではなく精神状態のことだ。それはバラ色の頬、赤い唇、しなやかな膝の問題ではない。そうではなく、それは意思の問題、想像力があるかどうか、感動する心が強いかどうかの問題だ。つまり、それは命という深い泉から湧き出る新鮮さだ。

青春とは、気質的に、食べず嫌いな臆病より、強い勇気があるかどうかを意味し、安楽を愛するより、冒険を優先するかどうかを意味する。これは20歳の少年より、60歳の人に存在することがしばしばである。

人は誰でも、単に、年月の数で、老いるのではない。私たちは、自分の理想を諦めることによって老いるのである。歳月が経てば皮膚にしわが寄る。しかし、情熱を断念すれば魂までしぼむ。心配や恐怖、自己嫌悪などは心をくじけさせ、精神を塵に変えてしまう。

60歳であろうと16才であろうと、人間の心の中には、驚異に対しては魅力を感じ、次に何が起こるかという、衰えない子どものような好奇心があるし、そして生きるという人生ゲームの喜びもある。
